Task 1

What is mean't by representation in the media?

Representations in the media is mean't be representations of reality. This means that they are artificial versions of the reality we perceive around us. Its also when the media shows us as the audience one side of the story which always tends to be the bad side which may manipulate people into thinking one group is fully bad.

How are things represented in the media?

There are many types of things that are represented in the media. Some of these things are politics/war, race, gender, homosexuality. Race is represented in the media as a stereotype in a way because of how in the media, they make it seem as if black people are always doing crimes and are all gang members and in gender, even though its still improving, they make women look weak and make the men look as it they are the supreme gender.

What is meant by stereotyping?

What is meant by stereotyping is that it is when you judge a person or a group of people who are different from you based on your own and others opinions and encounters. people who basically act very different to you, you tend to be stereotypical to you. For example, one stereotype could be that "all men that wear very tight jeans are gay" even though we know that most of them tend not to be gay,

What is stereotyping used for in film?

Stereotyping in film is used to show what people will assume what the characters are like. Stereotyping is mainly used in the genres thriller and horror. It shows how you can hide other characters identity in a way because stereotypes shows peoples own views on a person and those views may be in correct.

How are homosexual people represented in the media? Consider how, editing, audio and the other things we discussed - narcos

In media such as film, I've decided to do a scene from Narcos. In Narcos Pacho dances with a guy and kisses him at the end. Throughout the series, the directors use stereotypes to make it seem as if Pacho is the bad guy and he gets loads of girls; whereas in the scene it portrays Pacho's true colours by him being gay by kissing and dancing closely with another guy. However, we go back to the stereotype as Pacho being the bad guy when he smashes the glass bottle on someones head. This connotes him being a bad character by injuring one of his oppositions.

How are footballers regularly represented in the media? 1 example and include images

In the media, most known ad world class footballers are portrayed as icons and idols.this is because people like the way they play and people realise how good of a player they are. The media also shows the audience the good side of them like for them doing good things for the community or their home towns or donating football boots to people who cant afford them. for example, the media portray Cristiano Ronaldo as an idol as he is a role model for kids because people believe he is the best footballer in the world who is sponsored by nike and he also has his own nike boots which has initials alongside his jersey number "CR7" which is eligible to buy in any store which sells football boots. By Ronaldo doing this, it makes the media talk about him and show the world the good things and the benefits that he brings to people.

What representations does THE PASS conform to?

What representations does THE PASS challenge?

What is the overall message of the film?

In the film, there are many representations throughout the film such as race, gender, homosexuality and masculinity. I think that masculinity is one of the biggest representations because of the was the 2 gay people are portrayed. Also, the 2 characters are always in competition with each other because they are being normal guys; they are constantly in competition with each other in football, drinking and many other things but one will always be jealous of the other. The Pass challenges the way woman are shown in the film. First of all, it shows how woman are vulnerable at the beginning as it shows her as being an object towards men. but there are some connotations which is that she was wearing black, this connotes evil because of the dark clothing. As the film goes on, the tables turn and now the woman is on top because she realises he is gay.

Question 1:

Structuralism is basically what stages the film goes in to so that the film makes sense to the audience. It helps the audience have a narrative idea of what the film is about.

Question 2:

The 5 part narrative structures are Exposition - Rising Action - Climax - Falling Action - Denouement. One film that uses the 5 part narrative structure is The Fast and Furious 5. It uses the 5 part narrative structure; during the Exposition, Brian and Torretto were recruiting members to try and rob their enemies money. Rising in Action is when they plan to rob the money by using the blueprints of where the money is, getting the cars they will use and giving everyone specific rules to fulfil. Climax is when they are on there was to the police station station, braking inside the police station and escaping the police station. Falling in action is when they fooled the police army by handing in a empty crate instead of the one full of money and then driving back to their warehouse. Finally the Denouement is when they open the crate and see all the money, then they all by their nice houses and cars.
